How does marble get its shiny polished surface?

Clean marble is achieved by physically grinding and polishing your marble surface from its natural shape and texture (which is usually very rough) to a very beautiful smooth and shiny surface. In most cases this is done long before your see your new marble in the show room. This costly process is done with huge industrial machines that polish entire marble slabs with diamond covered polishing pads, from a rough natural surface to a smooth glasslike surface.

Important! Clean marble does not get its polished shiny surface from treatments of oils or polishes (it is not like polishing silver before your Christmas dinner). In fact, oils, vinegars and soaps can damage your marble's top surface. Marble is a calcium based natural stone that is quite porous and tends to stain, scratch and etch easily. Therefore, it is recommended to use a professional to keep your marble floor clean, fresh and shiny.

We at Palsor Floor Restoration are masters at re-polishing, flattening joints and restoring your marble to its natural beauty. We can finish your marble to a honed or a polish look.

Tips to protect your clean marble

  • Never use cleaners with any type of acid or that are not specially designed for marble.
  • Seal your marble! Sealing repels staining agents, but won't make your marble stain proof. Vinegar, citrus, tomato and any type of spill containing acidic components will etch your marble if it sits for a while. Our advice, wipe spills immediately!
  • Use the right marble protector by asking your fabricator which sealer it's right for you. When water no longer beads, it's time to reseal.
  • If you accidentally etch your marble, we recommend using a polishing powder. Fixing these problems as they occur will lessen the need to pay hundreds of dollars for marble restoration later.
  • Always clean marble countertops after use.
  • Be very careful in bathrooms when cleaning around toilets and tubs. Typical toilet and tub cleaners often etch your marble surfaces.
